| In general I expect southerners to be more conservative and more religious than people in California or the Northeast. [And I guess I assume the British may be more likely to like tea and that Australians are more likely to be careful with their sunscreen.] I don't think it's a judgment, per se -- just an expectation. Obviously I realize it's a massive over-generalization and is likely to be wrong almost as often as it's right. I also, as a liberal agnostic northeasterner, very much appreciate many of the people on here who are conservative religious southerners. Thank goodness we don't all have the same point of view or I'd die of boredom. | What is your opinion on de-barking? My Mom wants to de-bark our dogs and I think it's cruel, don't you agree? First of all, they are Shetland Sheepdogs (a.k.a. Shelties or mini-collies) and the breed is notorious for barking. They are very happy, playful dogs and well-trained otherwise. They bark when they are excited which is often or when they see a squirrel, rabbit or deer which is often as well. This isn't an issue with us but our anal neighbor who sleeps all the time and has called animal control on EVERY neighbor with a dog which is just stupid. This is also a man who had the police come to his house for shooting rabbits and squirrels in a residental area. Anyways, these dogs don't have any problems. They ARE NOT barking because they are lonely. I don't work and spend atleast 12-16 hrs. A DAY with them so thier barking isn't a cry for attention. We've tried scolding which I think is cruel as well. Kids get noisy when they're playing outside and we don't scream at them (unless you're a trailer trash Mom). | I understand completely. My grandmother is a pack rat. About a year ago- she got real sick (because of her living conditions) and she had to be in the hospital for about 2 months or so. My fiance, my sister and I (which I was pregnant at the time) took matters into our own hands. It's not wrong to have blankets for curtains- and it's ok to have some clutter, however, it's time to sort through the clutter divide needs from wants and get it cleaned up a little more. Then the roaches need taken care of- they may have a nest within the clutter (even more reason to sort through it all), but ultimately you will most likely need an exterminator (i.e. Terminix). This doesn't mean you are bad people at all- your health and safety is the most important thing- you need to take care of this and make it a healthy home. Good Luck! |
| Why are books about bratty rich girls so popular? I tried reading the first gossip girl and halfway through the first chapter I had to put it down. Then I ripped it up and recycled it. Pure crap. I did the same with the first Clique novel as well. I wanted to claw my eyes out with a spork while reading the clique book. They are so incredibly stupid. Most of the girls in my grade (I'm a freshman) LOVE these books. I do not understand it. What is so appealing about them? | People tend to like books that are different from their own lives. The books that you mention are so incredibly different than the reality of the majority of teens and preteens that they enjoy it. Call it escapist fiction if you like, I think it's basically incredibly soap opera-esque, causing people with no lives to read them in great fascination.
